Organic Apple Pie And Whole Wheat Crust

An apple pie made with organic apples and whole wheat crust.

This week I made an organic apple pie with organic apples and whole wheat crust made from the Bronze Chief brand of flour. Since I am a vegan I made an apple pie loosely following a recipe my mom used frequently. For the dough I mixed together:

  • 2 1/2 cups Bronze Chief flour
  • 1/2 coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup of Canola oil

I sometimes use other kinds of oil and non-dairy milk, but what I happened to have in the pantry this time around were the above ingredients, so I these went into the pie. For future pies, plan to continue using the Bronze Chief flour because this red wheat flour is less processed than white flour that is traditionally used in baking. Also, this whole wheat flour adds more of a rustic taste to a homemade apple pie with this theme.

I allowed the dough to chill in the fridge for an hour, and then separated the dough into two equal parts. I used the rolling pin to roll out the bottom shell and the top shell of the pie.
I cut up about seven cups of organic apples into small chunks for the pie filling.

For the apple pie filling, I used:

  • 7 cups chopped organic apples
  • 1/4 cup sugar in the Raw
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder

I cut up the homegrown organic apples and mixed these with the sugar and cinnamon. Since this is a vegan apple pie, I decided to experiment by using arrowroot powder as a thickening agent mixed into the filling.

I laid the bottom shell on the pie pan, which did not require oiling since this ingredient is already in the dough.
I placed the apple filling in the bottom shell.
I laid the top shell over the apples and baked the pastry at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour.
Slicing open the pie showcases the contrast between the apple filling and the golden crust, which was quite brown because of the whole wheat flour.
I enjoyed a slice of apple pie and ate it with a fork.

The video illustrates how I created the pie for people who prefer watching videos over reading blog posts.

  1. It looks delicious. You are very artistic in the way you make the pie look so pretty. I still need to work on presentation for my apple pie. Just as I am messy painter, I am a messy baker. I like how your pie looks!

    1. I liked your pie, Aya. I think it would be cool if you did start selling pies at Orchard House, it would be befitting the name of the house.
